How can we help animals?

Animals have as much right to live and survive as we do and knowingly or unknowingly, we care causing them more harm than required in pursuing our own lifestyles. Many animal activists like American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) are putting in their best to make sure that animal rights are protected and preserved. From our end, we can make a few minor adjustments in our daily lives to make sure that we do our bit. So, how can we help animals?

a. Vegan diet: This is probably the most direct way to help animals. Once we reduce animal product intake, it is imperative that the demand for such products go down and less and less animals will be slaughtered to cater to our needs.

b. Avoid animal by-products: Once we take our lifestyles off using woolens, silk, leather and fur, we would be saving a lot of animals from slaughter, sin e there products are made form animal by-products after they are slaughtered. For some, it may appear that wool is obtained from sheep and the animal is not killed, most woolen farms use cruel practices where sheep are killed when they don’t produce enough wool or are unable to reproduce. Don’t encourage this practice.

c. Companies: Make sure the companies you buy from do not test their products on animals. Many companies, especially those who manufacture medicines and cosmetics sue animals to test their products on and it is best to avoid buying from them. In fact animal activists have in the past pressurized cosmetics majors like Revlon and Avon to do away with testing on animals.

d. Pet: when in need of a pet, instead of buying one, adopt one from a shelter or a rescue group. Make sure that your pet is neutered and sprayed since many stray cats and dogs are put to sleep in shelters every year.

e. Boycott animal shows: Animal shows like circuses and zoos should be boycotted. Your presence there can only encourage the owners to make more money and perpetrate more cruelty to animals.

Last, but not least, if you are still wondering how can e help animals, it is wise to join a group like People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals or PETA and take active part in their activities and efforts.
